Transition of High School Students to Vocational Training/Employment and Independent Living
Objective:
The program is dedicated to assisting high school students with disabilities to achieve positive transition outcomes of community integration within the adult world and productivity at work. Individuals complete the program with a sense of pride, motivation and higher self esteem. The program conforms to the school calendar of the referring school districts. Students can attend on a half- or full-time basis.
Description:
The program serves students from over 20 Long Island school districts through on-site school programs and Abilities, Inc. Students receive counseling services that focus specifically on career development, employment preparation, and obtaining independence and integration in the work place and community. The following are also offered:
- Comprehensive individualized vocational and psycho-educational assessments
- Career guidance
- Basic skills development
- Paid/volunteer work experiences
- Job seeking skills
- Social skills development
- Job coaching services
- Placement assistance and follow along
Placement will be made based upon the recommendations from eight-day Pre-Vocational Evaluation, Woodcock-Johnson Revised Psycho-Educational Evaluation and McCarron-Dial Assessment. Following this evaluation, an Individual Career Plan is developed, based upon a student's needs, interests and aptitudes.
